At Timberland Partners, we know how important it is for residents to feel secure when making payments. Scams and phishing tactics have become increasingly prevalent and sophisticated, making them harder to spot and ignore. It is essential to remember best practices to protect yourself when making rent payments. The following tips will help provide clarity and concrete examples for avoiding scams and staying safe.

1. Use Approved Payment Platforms Only

Only use the authorized payment portals provided by your management company when making payments. These platforms are vetted and secure, with safeguards in place to protect your financial information. Avoid using third-party apps like Venmo or Zelle for rent payments unless explicitly instructed by your property management team. This leads to the next tip, please ensure you verify who is sending you messages.

2. Verify Links and Email Sources

Scammers often use phishing emails that are disguised as legitimate communication. These are in an attempt to trick you into clicking on fraudulent links. Review the sender’s email address before entering or sending any personal information. If the email address does not have the same domain (text following the @ in the email address) as the point of contact from your management company, please disregard the unrecognized sender and alert the team.

3. Look Out for Red Flags in Communication

Phishing scams often come with red flags, such as urgent language, threats, or demands for immediate action. Requests for bank information or payments via email are telltale signs, as well as language such as “pay right now, you’re late, final notice, etc.” The golden rule is if the request seems out of the ordinary, it most likely is, and you should contact your community directly to confirm.

4. Be Wary of Payment Requests via Phone or Text

Beyond email correspondence, phishers may attempt to contact you via phone or text. Property management companies will not ask you to send payments or provide sensitive information over the phone or through text messages. If you receive such a request, do not respond or engage, and reach out to your community directly.

5. Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Payment Transactions

Always use a secure, private wi-fi connection when making rent payments. Public wi-fi networks are vulnerable to hackers who may try to intercept your information. If possible, make payments from home or over a trusted, secured network.

6. Monitor Your Bank Statements

Review bank and credit card statements regularly to catch any unauthorized transactions. If you notice unusual activity, contact your bank immediately.

By following these best practices, you can protect yourself from scams and feel confident each time you make a rent payment. Our goal at Timberland Partners is to mitigate these scamming and phishing attempts to provide a safe and secure payment process. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns about making payments.
