Moving to a new city can be both an exciting and overwhelming experience, especially when you’re looking to make it feel like home. Whether you’ve recently moved into an apartment in a bustling urban area or are just beginning to settle into a smaller community, discovering your favorite local spots early on is a great way to get involved. From finding the best restaurants to your favorite place to go on a run, here are a few tips for making your new city feel like home.
1. Start Very Local
The first step in getting to know your new city is exploring your immediate neighborhood. As you move into your apartment, take time to walk around and familiarize yourself with local amenities. This is a great way to discover hidden gems close to home, whether it’s a cozy breakfast spot or a boutique where you can grab home decor.
Pro Tip: Use Google Maps to highlight points of interest and create a list of spots you want to try (this is also very helpful for vacations). Apps like Yelp and TripAdvisor are also helpful for reading reviews and finding local recommendations.
2. Follow the Pros
Are you someone who has to look at a restaurant menu before you go? We know we are. We use that same philosophy with social media to find our new favorite spots. Local influencers often showcase recommendations for everything from the ideal place to go on a date to the best place to devour a breakfast burrito. We recommend following others and joining a local Facebook group. There, you can ask for recommendations based on what you like to do for fun. A bonus is it’s a great way to meet future friends with similar interests!
Pro Tip: Check out Instagram hashtags related to your new city, such as #MinneapolisEats or #TwinCitiesParks, to discover popular spots and activities locals recommend.
3. Ask the Neighbors
Your neighbors and apartment community can be a great resource when adjusting to a new city. As a resident of an apartment community, you’re surrounded by people who have likely lived in the area for some time. Don’t hesitate to ask them for recommendations on their favorite things to do in the area.
Pro Tip: Attend resident events organized by your community. These events are a great opportunity to meet other residents and get insider tips about living in the area. Another great idea is posting to your community bulletin board in your resident portal.
4. Say Yes to Events
Attending local events and activities is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the culture of your new city. From farmers’ markets to live music, most cities offer fun events year-round. Keep an eye out for event calendars on community websites or apps like Meetup, which often list things to do in your area.
Pro Tip: Make it a habit to attend one local event a month. It could be a food festival, a movie night in the park, or a gallery walk. You’ll not only discover new places but also meet people who share your interests.
5. Get Your Green Thumb
Whether you’re looking for the ideal spot to set up your hammock or a place to throw the frisbee around, community parks are a great place to unwind. Look for public parks and recreation areas near your apartment. You may find lesser-known spots that offer a quieter escape from the bustle of busy living.
Pro Tip: Your city’s website should have an expansive list of parks available to you. If not, we recommend downloading the app AllTrails to find a hike you haven’t done near you.
7. Stay Open-Minded
Adjusting to a new city requires patience. It can take time to find the places that truly resonate with you. Be open-minded as you explore new restaurants, parks, and entertainment options. As you settle into your apartment and your new routine, your favorite spots will emerge.
Pro Tip: Take a “city walk” each weekend to explore a different neighborhood. You’ll slowly build a list of places that fit your vibe and lifestyle.
We’re so excited to welcome you as a resident of one of our communities. Our final tip is to talk with us! We are residents of the area, and we like to think we have good taste. We’d be happy to help you find your new favorite spots!
